Since 1986 Portrait of a Bookstore has been one of the great hidden treasures of Los Angeles. Recently named "pound for pound, the coolest bookstore in LA, if not the entire world" (Yelp.com), we're tiny, but mighty. For the past ten years, we've shared a home with the beloved Aroma Café in Studio City.

Our bookstore walls are lined with a hand-picked selection of books of all genres, from bestsellers to the most obscure and unusual titles. Our selection makes for the kind of store you can rely on to carry that book that was just mentioned on NPR or in The New York Times, but also the very best books you've never heard of. Before you know it, you'll have a stack of books in your hands you can't live without. Our wonderful staff is made up of passionate readers with distinct tastes who delight in discussing books and guiding you to your next choice. Our book buyer, Lucia Silva, recommends books seasonally on NPR's Morning Edition with Susan Stamberg.

Our children's section is most exquisite - each book is chosen with care and conscience, from classic picture books to the most cutting-edge young adult novels. No matter which book you choose for your child, you can be sure it's a good one.

You may also find a few other things you can't live without... antique pearls draped over the cover of a book, a Victorian tea set, a vintage typewriter, antiquarian books, or an antique conductor's baton. Julie von Zerneck, Portrait of a Bookstore's owner, brings antiques from England to complement the bookstore's selections, creating a gorgeous collection of unusual antiques that make very special gifts. We also have one of the best collections of greeting cards in the city.

We also carry many other special gifts - fine journals, exquisite pens, jewelry, purses, trays, candlesticks, hand-knit baby sweaters from England... You never know what you'll find at Portrait of a Bookstore, but you can be sure you'll find something! So come get a cappuccino, pick out a book, and relax in our garden patio.
